What are sea grapes & where do you find it?

Sea Grapes are part of the broad seaweed family and are known scientifically as “Caulerpa lentillifera“. Other names for it include green caviar seaweed or Umibudo. This delicious seaweed is traditionally found in the waters of Okinawa (Japan) but it has since spread to other parts of the world where tropical temperatures are common. Due to advanced farming and dehydration technology we’re able to grow sea grapes year round and pack the green caviar with a shelf life of 12 months, making it possible to ship this delicacy directly to you to enjoy at home!

How do you prepare green caviar sea grapes?

We have a dedicated page showing you exactly how to prepare and eat sea grapes here. The short version: Umibudo is served uncooked. Take the dehydrated umibudo (sea grapes) out of their bag and refresh them in iced water for two to five minutes for the small green berries to firm. The longer you leave the seagrapes in the iced water the less salt it will have. Serve condiments separately and simply dip the sea grapes into condiments. If condiments or sauces are poured over the umibudo, they’ll will lose their popping texture.

How many sea grapes will I receive?

Each pack of sea grapes contains 3.5oz/100g dehydrated sea grapes –  you can not eat the sea grapes right of the pack in their dehydrated state, you’ll have to steep them in fresh water for a few minutes first. You’ll see them come back to life right in front of your eyes, increasing in size and weight five-fold!

In total, once ready to eat and soaked, you’ll have around 1 pound/500g of fresh sea grapes.

What kind of nutrients does green caviar (sea grapes) contain?

1. Sea grapes are rich in mineral elements, which are often processed into raw food products that are used in the beauty and bodybuilding industry.

2. Sea grapes are resistant to bacteria and fungi and are often used to treat high blood pressure and rheumatism. At the same time it is a high-yielding seaweed plant with the reputation of being a vegan substitute for “green caviar”.

3. Sea grapes contain a large number of amino acids, unsaturated fatty acids, polysaccharides, minerals, vitamins, and rich in phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, copper, selenium and other trace elements. Its nutritional value peer 3.5oz/100g is much higher compared to other algae and vegetables.

4. The sea grape plant is rich in protein and has great benefits for the body, in Okinawa it is called “longevity algae”.

How do I store Seagrapes? What’s the expiration date?

Please store the sea grapes in their original packaging or in a closed bag/jar in a dry and cool place, avoid direct sunlight. Room temperature is great for sea grapes as they’re a tropical seaweed that loves warm conditions.

Use before expiration date which is at least 6 months after purchase – the best before date is 12 months from production. You will receive your seagrapes with a guaranteed best before date of 6 months though, so you’ll be in no rush to enjoy them. Our sea grapes are harvested on a regular basis, so be assured that you’re receiving the freshest seaweed.

What is the shelf life of sea grapes and how do I store them? 
Sea grapes can be kept for up to 12 months without cooling! Take only what you need out of the bag and keep the rest in the fridge in the included doypack. 1/5 of your sea grapes pack should be enough for 1 person/1 meal. It is important not to freeze or boil the green caviar as it is still fresh. If you do so, the tiny little grapes may pop and will loose their crunchy texture.

Yes, in fact we ship worldwide via priority airmail or registered trackable priority airmail.

How Long Will It Take To Get My Package?

Our warehouse is located in Germany, so if you’re based in Europe approx 5-7 days. For the US and other countries, you should receive your order within 5-14 days after having placed an order. For registered priority airmail you’ll be able to track your order in near real-time.

Can Sea Grapes be shipped via airmail without spoiling?

Yes, absolutely! We dehydrate your sea grapes prior to shipping them out which makes them last 12 months. So once your parcel reaches you, your sea grapes will still be fresh – just let them soak in warm water for a couple of minutes and voilá, they look and taste just as freshly harvested.

What Shipping Methods Are Available?

All orders are dispatched from our warehouse in Germany via international priority airmail. Our preferred shipping partner is Deutsche Post, the parent company of DHL.

If you’d like us to use a different shipping partner like FedEx, TNT or DPD please get in touch with us directly before placing an order.

When is my order shipped?

During the business week we ship all orders within 24 hours. If your order reaches us before noon (CET) it is dispatched on the same day. On Saturdays orders leave our warehouse at 5pm, all orders entered on Sunday are dispatched Monday morning.

How do I place an Order?

It’s really easy: Go to our shop and use the “Add to cart” button for all the seaweeds you’d like to order. Once you’ve finished selecting, simply visit the checkout page through the “Cart” icon on the top right side. Now all that’s left is entering your shipping/billing info and selecting the payment method. Upon placing your order, your package gets dispatched from our warehouse within 24 hours.

Do I need an account to place an order?

No, you can checkout without an account and we also do not force you to create an account upon checkout either. There is the possibility to create a Seagrapes24 account though which will make managing your addresses, orders and preferences such as the Wish List much easier.
